A Welcome from Principal Proffitt

Principal Tonya Proffitt

Dear Corbin Primary Families and Community,

Welcome to Corbin Primary School! It is my privilege to welcome you to another exciting school year. Whether you are joining our CPS family for the very first time or returning for another adventure, we are so glad you're here.

The 2026–2027 school year marks my 22nd year in education. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to serve as a fifth-grade reading and social studies teacher, assistant principal, the district's P–5 Supervisor of Instruction, and now as principal of Corbin Primary School. While I am originally from Harlan County, Corbin has been home for more than two decades, and I can confidently say that every day is a great day to be a Redhound.

Outside of school, my greatest joy is my family. My husband and I have one son, who is beginning his freshman year at Corbin High School. As a parent, choosing Corbin Independent Schools for our own child was one of the easiest decisions we have ever made. As your principal, my hope is that Corbin Primary becomes one of the easiest and best decisions your family can make as well.

At Corbin Primary, we believe every child deserves to feel known, valued, challenged, and loved. We work intentionally to create a school where every student experiences a true sense of belonging, every classroom provides consistent and engaging learning opportunities, and every child has equitable access to the support they need to succeed. Our goal is not simply to help students learn—we want them to love learning.

Serving children in kindergarten through third grade is both an incredible privilege and an enormous responsibility. These early years establish the foundation for academic success, build confidence, and shape a child's perception of school for years to come. We never lose sight of that responsibility. Our mission—enriching the lives of our students through a lifelong love of learning, discovery, and citizenship —is more than words displayed on a wall. It is the purpose that guides every decision we make.

Families will find that our teachers work collaboratively with a shared commitment to excellence.

We use high-quality instructional materials grounded in the latest educational research and the science of learning, while continually refining our practices to meet the needs of every learner. Through our comprehensive Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), students may receive individualized academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support whenever needed. Our team of interventionists, counselors, special education professionals, instructional staff, and community partners work together to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Learning at Corbin Primary extends far beyond the core classroom. Students enjoy a rich variety of experiences through art, music, physical education, library-media, science enrichment, social-emotional learning, and other engaging opportunities. Field trips, school celebrations, leadership experiences, family events, and joyful traditions help create memories that last a lifetime. It is these meaningful experiences—combined with exceptional instruction and caring relationships—that truly make Corbin Primary "The Happiest School on Earth."
