Cooper: Setting the Pace for Excellence

What happens when a student decides that finishing the assignment isn't the finish line?

For Cooper at Corbin Primary, it means setting a goal, working toward it, and finding a way to keep growing.

As Corbin Primary began using XTRA Math with third graders as an early-finisher opportunity, Cooper saw an opportunity to challenge himself. On his very first try, he earned a multiplication certificate—a milestone made even more meaningful by the work he had already been doing on his own.

Cooper has been practicing his multiplication facts at home as he prepares for fourth grade, intentionally working ahead and setting goals for himself. He isn't waiting for someone to tell him what to practice next. He is looking for ways to push himself beyond what is required.

And perhaps the best part? He does it humbly and happily.

Cooper's work ethic isn't about being the first to finish or being recognized for what he can do. He simply takes pride in improving and enjoys the challenge of seeing what he can accomplish.

That attitude is beginning to make an impact beyond Cooper.

His classmates have noticed. Other students are now working efficiently to complete their assignments so they can spend time practicing their own multiplication facts. Cooper's example has helped turn an individual goal into a source of motivation for the entire classroom.

One student's willingness to do a little more has inspired others to do the same.

Cooper is showing that sometimes the strongest leadership doesn't come from being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes, it looks like quietly setting a goal, working hard to reach it, and smiling when you get there.
