Jaxon Shelby: Someone You Can Count On
For Jaxon Shelby, work ethic isn’t something he talks about.
It’s something he shows—day after day.
From the time Jaxon entered high school as a freshman, he has had goals for himself. He wanted to play football. He wanted to be part of the band. And someday, he hopes to work as an assistant at Corbin Primary School.
What stands out about Jaxon is that he hasn’t simply talked about those goals.
He has consistently shown up and put in the work to pursue them.
Jaxon joined the football team despite the challenges he faces, and his commitment has never wavered. He doesn’t miss practice—even when being part of the team means getting up early and arriving at school at 5:30 in the morning.
For Jaxon, showing up isn’t dependent on whether something is easy or convenient. When he commits to something, people can count on him to be there.
That dependability is evident on game nights, too. Jaxon carries water to the players and makes sure they have what they need, including during the hot summer months when the work is physically demanding. He doesn’t do it because he expects recognition. He does it because he understands that being part of a team means being someone others can depend on.
His commitment extends beyond football. Jaxon is also a member of the band and consistently participates in games and pep band opportunities. Whether he is on the football field, in the band, or serving his school in another capacity, he approaches his responsibilities with the same enthusiasm and dedication.
Perhaps the clearest example of Jaxon’s dependability can be found at Corbin Primary School.
Through a peer tutoring experience developed in collaboration with his primary school teacher, Jaxon works in her classroom every school day. The experience gives him the opportunity to learn in the environment where he hopes to someday work, but it has also given his teacher someone she knows she can count on.
From the very first day, Jaxon approached the opportunity with an impressive level of professionalism. He arrives ready to work, asks what needs to be done, and follows through with whatever task is given to him.
He doesn’t need to be constantly reminded. He doesn’t look for the easiest assignment. He simply shows up and does his part.
