Building Connections, One Conversation at a Time

A conversation might seem like a small thing.

A question asked.

An answer shared.

A common interest discovered.

But sometimes, the simplest conversations create the strongest connections.

In Mr. Jonathan Goodin’s Level II Spanish classroom at Corbin High School, students are discovering just how much can happen when they step outside their comfort zones and find the words to connect with someone else.

During a recent classroom activity, students partnered with a variety of classmates to talk about their daily lives, personal interests, and the things they enjoy doing beyond the school day. But these weren’t just ordinary conversations. Students were communicating entirely in Spanish, putting their learning into action as they worked to express their thoughts, understand one another, and keep each conversation going.

Each new partner brought a new opportunity. Students had to listen closely, choose their words carefully, and communicate their ideas with clarity. When speaking in another language, even a familiar thought can take extra effort to express. It requires patience, confidence, and a willingness to try. Students had to trust what they knew, learn from each interaction, and keep going even when finding the right words wasn't easy.

And that's where the real learning happens.

Communication is about more than speaking so others can hear you. It's about listening so others know they matter. It's about being willing to share a little of yourself while making room to learn something about someone else. In these conversations, students are building more than Spanish proficiency. They are building confidence, strengthening relationships, and discovering the power of understanding one another.

The ability to communicate across languages and experiences will reach far beyond the walls of this classroom. It will shape how these students collaborate with others, navigate unfamiliar situations, and build relationships throughout their lives.

In Mr. Goodin’s classroom, every conversation is a chance to practice a new skill, find common ground, and make a connection. And sometimes, that connection begins with something as simple as finding the right words in a different language.

That's the Redhound Way!
