More Than Hard Work: Gavin Smith and The Redhound Way

Walk down the hallway first thing in the morning, and chances are you will run into Gavin Smith long before the first bell rings. He makes a point to go out of his way to greet his teachers every single day—not because he happens to be in their morning homeroom or on their team, but simply because he values connection and intentionally starts his day with energy and purpose. That small, daily habit speaks volumes about who Gavin is as a person. Across Corbin Middle School, eighth grader Gavin Smith stands out as a clear example of what it means to live out this month's core Redhound Way value: Work Ethic.
That intentionality shapes how Gavin approaches his education every single day. Eighth grade math teacher Mrs. Mahan notices how his personal drive sets a standard for those around him. She points out that on the rare occasion he misses class, he returns the next day with completed work, thoughtful questions, and a smile. "For Gavin, it’s less about completing work as a measure of compliance... rather, it is doing all things with excellence and quality so he is better because of it. It’s his work ethic that makes him respected and valued by his teachers and peers."
That steady commitment carries directly into science class, where eighth grade science teacher Mrs. Jones sees how Gavin’s character strengthens the dynamic of the whole room. "Gavin Smith consistently demonstrates a positive work ethic in my class," Mrs. Jones notes. "He is friendly, outgoing, and always willing to help his peers. Gavin contributes to a collaborative classroom environment and approaches his work with a cooperative attitude that benefits the entire learning community."
Mrs. Preston shares the same sentiment as his other teachers, "It has been an absolute privilege to watch Gavin grow since I first subbed in his 6th-grade class and throughout my time working with him in First Priority. He brings an exceptional work ethic and genuine conscientiousness to everything he does—whether he is tackling his schoolwork, supporting his teammates on the football field, giving his all in baseball, or simply treating those around him with kindness. I feel truly blessed to be his teacher!"
His dedicated work ethic is just as evident outside the academic classroom. In eighth grade Language Arts, Coach Hamlin notes that Gavin's commitment and resilience were put to the test early in the football season when an injury sidelined him from playing when discussing how football season was going during a conversation in A & A. For many middle schoolers, a setback like that means stepping away from the team entirely. Instead, Gavin chose to double
down on his effort by stepping into the role of team manager. Coach Hamlin stated, "Every single day I am leaving school to head home and the football team is getting ready to start practice, Gavin is right there on the field, going through the full stretching routines alongside his teammates and jumping in to help run drills, manage equipment, and support the team in any way he can." Gavin's positive outlook never wavers. He shows up eager to learn, eager to improve, and completely focused on how he can lift up the people around him through
continuous effort.
The Redhound Way was designed to capture the habits and dispositions that prepare students for life far beyond graduation. Gavin Smith proves that work ethic is not just about turning in assignments, but a daily standard built on discipline, genuine kindness, and unyielding optimism. Whether he is raising the bar in his academic classes or supporting his teammates from the sidelines, Gavin shows the entire community what it truly means to lead with character.
