Masyn Elam: Taking Initiative Beyond the Mat

For Corbin High School student Masyn Elam, hard work is nothing new.

As a competitive all-star cheerleader, Masyn travels to Louisville three times a week to pursue something she loves—cheering, competing, and, of course, flipping. She also runs track and stays committed to the many demands that come with being a student-athlete.

But Masyn’s work ethic doesn’t stop when practice ends.

When she saw an opportunity to turn one of her interests into something of her own, she took it. Masyn created “Masyn’s Flippin’ Buttons,” a button-making business that helps offset some of the expenses that come with competitive cheerleading.

What started as a creative idea has become a way for Masyn to use her talents, serve her community, and take ownership of something she built herself.

She has created buttons featuring Corbin schools, district events, and Redhound pride—bringing her creativity into the community in a unique way. One of her favorite creations is especially fitting: a Redhound Way button.

Masyn’s story is a great example of what it means to Take Initiative, one of the indicators of Work Ethic in The Redhound Way. She saw an opportunity, put her creativity to work, and took the first step to turn an idea into something real.

She is working hard at what she loves, finding ways to make that hard work go further, and using her talents to add a little more Redhound pride to the community along the way.
