Corbin Independent School District strives to be the BEST school system we can be. Test scores and academic competitions consistently rank the district as one of the top districts in Kentucky. The Corbin Independent School District has been serving the area for more than 100 years with rigorous academic standards and quality education. The district's expanding curriculum and extracurricular programs strive to continually meet the needs of all 2,400 students. --Corbin Independent School District ranked 3rd in the state on the 2007 Commonwealth Accountability Test (CATS)! -- South Elementary & Central Primary Schools ranked in the top 5% of state elementary schools on the 2007 CATS! --Corbin Middle School ranked 4th in the state on the 2007 CATS! --Corbin High School ranked in the top 7% of state high schools on the 2007 CATS! -- Corbin High School was named one of 25 "Model High Schools" in the country and the ONLY one from Kentucky in 2006! Corbin’s grade 3 students score at the 75th percentile in Math on a national Test! Beginning in the 2006-2007 school year, a new state regulation required each elementary school in Kentucky to administer and report the results of a nationally norm-referenced test for reading and math. South Elementary tested grade three students using the Measures of Academic Progress Test (MAP Test) in May of 2007 in reading and math to fulfill this state regulation. MAP is a nationally norm-referenced test through Northwestern Evaluation Association. Corbin 3rd grade students scored at the 75th percentile rank in math and at the 61st percentile in reading. The average national score is at the 50th percentile rank. Desktop computers, wireless laptop computers, Promethean interactive whiteboards, projectors, and a video-conferencing center provide instructional tools throughout the district. All classrooms have computers with internet access and access to the Discovery Channel/KET video streaming Encyclomedia. -- Corbin School District's Communications Career Academy provides students with hands-on experience in the communications field. From print media and television newscasts to a 100-watt radio station (Redhound Radio WRHR 95.3 FM) and family movie theatre, the program is growing and evolving. Corbin High Learning Center – The Corbin High School “library” does not look like the normal library nor does it operate like one. This inviting media center contains the features and spaces normally found in a school library PLUS areas for a radio station, TV production room, video-conferencing room, small-group performance area, and the Redhound Café. The “Learning Center” provides students with distance learning programs, research and tutoring opportunities, meeting areas, TV production programs for Channel 18, and radio production programs for Redhound Radio 95.3 FM WRHR. The multi-media learning facility is open extended hours to serve students, staff, and the community.
