The district has implemented several researched-based programs and activities to help achieve our educational goals.  Some of the programs are as follows:

Reading Recovery The Reading Recovery Program is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-to-one tutoring for low-achieving first graders.

Individual students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher. As soon as students can meet grade-level expectations and demonstrate that they can continue to work independently in the classroom, their lessons are discontinued, and new students begin individual instruction.

Approximately 75% of students who complete the full 12- to 20-week intervention can meet grade-level expectations in reading and writing. Follow-up studies indicate that most Reading Recovery students also do well on standardized tests and maintain their gains in later years.

MAP Testing - Corbin Independent is utilizing the electronic adaptive Measures of Academic Progress Test (MAP) with  students in grades kindergarten through 10 in our district.  MAP testing provides our teachers with a snapshot of students' weak and strong academic areas.  This identification is a valuable teaching tool and helps to improve student achievement.  MAP helps teachers and administrators to:

Ø      Monitor growth in student achievement over time

Ø      Monitor the progress of all students toward state and district standards

Ø      Place students into appropriate courses or instructional settings

Ø      Provide instructional focus

Ø      Communicate to parents and the community

Thinking Maps - This student organizer program is used in Kindergarten through 12th grade as a common visual language in our learning community.  Thinking Maps are eight visual-verbal learning tools, each based on a fundamental thinking process and used together as a set of tools for showing relationships.  Students using the Thinking Maps program become independent, reflective life-long learners.

LiPS Program - In an effort to meet the needs of our struggling readers, Corbin Independent Schools has implemented The Lindamood Phonemic Sequencing® (LiPS®) Program which successfully stimulates phonemic awareness.  Students become aware of the mouth actions which produce speech sounds.  This awareness becomes the means of verifying sounds within words and enables students to become self-correcting in reading and spelling, and speech.  It is common for individuals to gain several grade levels in decoding ability in four weeks to six weeks of intensive treatment, or to make further gains.
