Record number of Corbin Students Selected for All-State Choir
Corbin Independent Schools had 10 students who made the All-State Choir sponsored by the Kentucky Music Educator’s Association (KMEA). According to Choir Director/Teacher Linda Hood, this is quite an honor for the individual student, as well as the district to have so many representing Corbin in this event. Students performed earlier this month in Louisville at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. “The selection process if quite lengthy, it really is an honor to be selected for All-State,” Hood said. Mattie Terrell and Stephanie Lawless were selected out of 1,397 students across the state for the High School All-State Choir. Lucas Lay, Brenton Smith, Martin Jones, Evan Baylor and Logan Reynolds were selected out of more than 550 for the Junior High All-State Choir. Cassie Couch, Hannah Hart and Sydney Ledington were selected out of more than 550 for the All-State Kentucky Children’s Chorus. “This is the most we’ve ever had representing the district,” Hood said. “I’m so proud of all them.”

OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS TO GET INVOLVED - letter from Carcille Burchette
Dear Parents,
The Academic Boosters Club is your parent/teacher organization at Corbin High School. Our goal is to recognize and promote academic achievement at all levels.
Among our activities are the special breakfasts given at least twice a year after grading periods. Over 200 students benefit. We sponsor the academic banquet at the end of the year, providing a complimentary dinner and certificate to nearly 250 students. Plaques are presented to the seniors. On senior recognition day, academic scholarships are awarded to the seniors having the top GPAs.
All these and other activities require funds. We can accomplish these primarily through membership fees and donations. Hundred of dollars are needed for each and our funds are limited. We may have to eliminate or change some of these activities for next year. To date, only a small percentage of parents are members. Please consider joining and/or making a donation. We want to continue to recognize and promote academic achievement here at CHS. It is only possible with your help.
Thank you,
Carcille C. Burchette
President, ABC

JROTC FIELD DAY HELD AT CORBIN HIGH SCHOOL
Written By: Cadet Corporal Curtis Fields, (CHS Student)
Corbin High School JROTC recently hosted our annual Field Day. Our Field Day consists of a lot of competitions involved with other schools that test how the other JROTC schools stack up against each other.
Hosting a competition was difficult but in the end all our preparation and planning paid off. Our competition was massive. We had twelve schools that attended the competition.
Our Raider Challenge was very rigorous and physically demanding. It also tested the team’s ability to motivate and bring each and every member of their team through the obstacle course. It was very slick and slippery consisting of roughly 3/4h of a mile. The course is mostly up hill, and the teams had to cross a one and two rope bridge.
The one rope bridge is an event in which the teams maneuvered up a 45 degree gap using only a single rope. The two rope bridge is two ropes that are tied to trees on opposite sides, the team members had to maneuver their way across a 12 foot gap using their elite sense of balance and patience. The other two obstacles consisted of a low crawl and a 4 man liter carry. Then they raced to the finish line.
Our Tug of War was an event that was a test of pure brute strength and power. Only the strongest teams were victorious in this event.
Our Academic event consisted of a written test that was given out to challenge the team’s knowledge on JROTC concepts.
Our mystery event was very secretive; I haven’t been informed on exactly what this event was. It shall remain a mystery.
Our Color guard was a test of discipline, and pure skill. Each team member held a high responsibility in this event. It was their jobs to ensure that their team looked and performed well.
Overall the other school’s cadets who attended the event were challenged and everyone had fun, and some of them left with Trophies. The competition was good and I hope that our next competition is just as good. JROTC competitions are designed to reinforce teamwork and motivation within team members.

Sixth grade students at CMS on the Quantum Leap team "mined" chocolate chip cookies using a toothpick. They pay a $100 mining fee plus $100 for every five minutes it takes them to mine the chocolate. They are also fined $100 for every piece that breaks off during mining. The chocolate chips are put into a straw and they receive $1,000 for every 2 cm of straw that is filled. Corbin
Preschool
Preschool Students Create Frosty by Reading
The Breakthrough Preschool 4-year old class at the Corbin Preschool Center has been working to promote literacy skills in both the classroom and at home. The class recently worked very hard on a read-at-home project called Frosty's Reading Project, where each child read with someone at home and wrote the name of the book on a snowball to fill in Frosty and create a snowy hillside beside of Frosty. In less than two weeks the class had brought in 184 snowballs! They were rewarded for their efforts by earning a trip to the Laurel County Library in London, Kentucky where they were led on a tour of the facility and enjoyed some reading and other projects in the children's section of the library. Reading and early literacy skills were also promoted during the Dr. Seuss Read Across America program where the class enjoyed guest readers, dressing up as their favorite Seuss character, as they walked the red carpet at the movie premiere party and a trip to the Tri-County Cineplex to see Horton Hears A Who. Early literacy skills and reading are a vital part in preparing children for the transition to Kindergarten and we thank all the children and parents who have worked hard in helping the children to be successful in these programs! The teachers for the Breakthrough Preschool Program are Jeanie Helton and Carla Lawson.

Corbin’s grade 3 students score at the 75th percentile in Math on a national Test!
A new state regulation requirs each elementary school in Kentucky to administer and report the results of a nationally norm-referenced test for reading and math. South Elementary tested grade three students using the Measures of Academic Progress Test (MAP Test) in May of 2007 in reading and math to fulfill this state regulation. MAP is a nationally norm-referenced test through Northwestern Evaluation Association. Corbin 3rd grade students scored at the 75th percentile rank in math and at the 61st percentile in reading. The average national score is at the 50th percentile rank. If you have any questions, please contact Brenda Hammons at 528-1303.
