What guided you to enter the teaching profession?
I received a scholarship that paid for my college tuition if I completed the program and worked as a teacher for four years in West Virginia. Once I worked with “kids” I knew that this was what God had planned for me. The reward is making a difference in the lives of our young people.
What has been your greatest satisfaction professionally?
I have enjoyed every job during my tenure in education but Corbin has presented the greatest satisfaction. It has been a tremendously joyful experience over the past 18 years to watch the Corbin school district flourish and grow academically. We have the greatest staff that continues to provide success and opportunities for students. I am proud that Corbin is recognized as one of the top school districts in Kentucky!
What are your educational interests?
Every educator must seek to provide the very BEST education for EVERY child. This view has allowed me to work closely with many friends in education, especially from other school districts, striving to improve educational services. This means that curriculum and instruction development have to be the top priorities to allow a school district to meet the needs of the students. In Corbin, we have taken master schedules, building design, extracurricular activities, school calendar, testing, and other components to advance the opportunities in curriculum and instruction!
What professional/service organizations have you been or currently involved?
Being active in various organizations has provided me numerous opportunities for professional growth and development of great friendships. I currently serve on several Boards [Kentucky School Superintendents Association, Council for Better Education, National School Plant Management Association, Kentucky School Plant Management Association, Local Superintendents Advisory Committee for LRC, and Superintendents Advisory Committee for Commissioner] and previously served in a leadership role in a variety of groups [President - WV Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, President - WV Personnel Association, President [2] Kentucky School Plant Management Association, and President Corbin Rotary Club].
What do you enjoy outside of education?
I really enjoy being with my wife Sally and our four children, seven grandchildren, and other family members at get-togethers. We have great fun in sharing, including education talk. When we moved to Corbin, I was told that it would be my own fault if did not take advantage of the area’s natural environment. This has led me to a real joy for fishing at Laurel Lake, don’t catch many fish but that is okay. I also enjoy my church family, wood working, and outdoor activities.
