Energy Program
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle has become a common goal among all of Corbin Independent Schools.
At the high school alone, the Environmental Science Class/PRIDE Club recycles approximately 400 cubic feet of paper and plastic each month.
In addition to the Recycling Programs at each school, Corbin received a Hybrid-Diesel School Bus through a project from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program and is supported by Recovery Act funding. Thomas Built Buses, one of the manufacturers of the buses, estimates that most typical diesel school bus engines get around 7.5 miles to the gallon. And with hybrid diesel technology, each district can expect around 12.5 miles to the gallon—increasing fuel efficiency by about 5 miles per gallon per bus. Kentucky Schools will receive 213 hybrid-diesel buses in 2010 and 2011.
Our district has also been funded through the School Energy Managers Project (SEMP) to receive an Energy Manager for this school year.
Courtney D. Lewis was hired this summer as Energy Manager for Corbin and Whitley County Schools. She is a recent graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where she majored in Environmental Health Science.
 Lewis, a Laurel County native, will bring her experience to the two districts in helping them to become more energy efficient.
Not only will Lewis be analyzing utility bills for savings and energy cost reduction, she will also be coordinating energy efficiency curriculum to educate the students. Lewis will also be putting together an Energy Team for each district, as well as, conducting energy audits of each school. “I have begun working on many exciting goals for both districts. Getting the students involved in this project will be very rewarding for me because they will take the information they learn about energy efficiency and hopefully apply it in their daily lives and teach others,” Lewis said.
